Alumni Board Member Spotlight
Charlotte (Heldofer) Bivens ('80)
I graduated in 1980 from St. John’s School of Nursing.  I immediately completed my BSN at Sangamon State University (now UIS-Springfield) and then completed my Master of Science in Nursing in 1995.
This fall I will begin my 40th year at HSHS St. John’s Hospital working the entire time on the orthopedic unit.  In July of 2005, I left my full-time position at the hospital to teach nursing at Richland Community College and Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois and then transitioned to Millikin University exclusively.  Since I can’t just do one thing at a time, I also spent some time working part-time in home care for Interim Healthcare.  I am frequently asked whether I like teaching or working ‘the floor’ better and I honestly can’t choose.  I have a very strong pride in belonging to the St. John’s Hospital family and caring for patients on an individual basis.  Teaching our future nurses is also very challenging and rewarding and hope that I am doing a good job.  I see many of my former students working on the units of St. John’s!  If you would like to see some of my work (in conjunction with HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur), check out this link:  http://millikin.edu/performance-learning-news/rapid-response

I have been married to Kenett Bivens since two weeks after graduation.  I enjoy gardening, sewing, and travelling.  Although we have no children, I am very proud of all my nieces and nephew and we love to spend time with them.  The youngest just graduated from high school and will be heading to college!  My how time flies.

I became a member of the Alumni Board a year ago.  Although my schedule has not allowed me to participate in the activities with the students at St. John’s College of Nursing, I have been active in planning the class reunion and the alumni mixers.  I am a Class Agent for the class of 1980 and feel proud to try to keep in touch with my graduating class.  At our board meetings it is amazing to me to hear of all the scholarships and programs the college now has in place.

Hope to see many of my classmates at the class reunion in October.
