Nursing Pipeline Preparatory Program (NP3)

Inspiring Teens toward Nursing Careers

The Nursing Pipeline Preparatory Program (NP3), gives young people a head start into nursing careers and provides them with early mentors within the Springfield nursing community. The after-school program is sponsored by St. John's College of Nursing in partnership with Springfield Public Schools District 186. Partners of the NP3 program include St. John's Hospital and the City of Springfield.

Students enter NP3 when they are high school freshman and continue through their senior year. This four year experience familiarizes them with nursing school coursework, undergraduate college and nursing school admissions processes, test-taking skills, critical thinking and specialty training. The curriculum, developed by faculty and staff from St. John's College of Nursing and District 186, includes:
  • Special lectures
  • Physical skills-training
  • Job shadowing
  • Problem-based learning (PBL)
  • Laboratory aptitude in the state of the art simulation center research
  • College-planning seminars and financial aid planning
  • Supplemental instruction in college-level science, technology, engineering and math courses
  • Mentoring activities modeled after nursing education programs
The administration, faculty and staff will mentor five High School freshman from each Springfield High School. The students will come to St. John’s College after school for two hours and learn how their stem courses relate to nursing. Active learning sessions will be provided for two weeks in the fall, two weeks in the spring and two weeks in the summer. Supper will be provided at each session. The pipeline students will be enrolled in the program until their senior year. A new group of freshmen will be admitted each fall. Students from underrepresented groups are welcome to apply for this program.

Nursing faculty, family nurse practitioners and educators  from District 186 lead the after-school sessions.
